This section directs the Director of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum to conduct a study on Holocaust education efforts in states, local educational agencies, and public elementary and secondary schools. The study will examine a representative sample of states, local educational agencies, and public elementary and secondary schools. The Director will determine whether states and local educational agencies require or offer optional Holocaust education. The study will identify standards and requirements related to Holocaust education, including the existence of centralized resources, professional development opportunities, and involvement of informal educational organizations. The study will assess challenges and gaps preventing educators from fulfilling Holocaust education requirements and identify needed training and resources. The study will determine intended outcomes of Holocaust education and methods used to achieve those outcomes. The study will identify instructional materials used, disciplines in which the Holocaust is taught, time allotted, and the comprehensiveness of the curriculum. The study will also identify approaches used to assess student knowledge of the Holocaust and their ability to analyze antisemitism, bigotry, hate, and genocide. Following the study, the Director must submit a report on the results to Congress within 180 days of completion or 3 years after enactment.
