What does IMPROVING COORDINATION BETWEEN FEDERAL AND STATE AGENCIES AND of S 269 do?

This section amends Section 205(r) of the Social Security Act to require the Commissioner of Social Security to provide information to the Do Not Pay working system, to the extent feasible, to help prevent improper payments and support recovery of improperly paid benefits. The Commissioner of Social Security must enter into an agreement with the agency operating the Do Not Pay working system that covers the proportional share of State death data costs. The Commissioner of Social Security may not record a death unless there is clear and convincing evidence to support the presumption of death. This section also amends Section 205(r)(7) of the Social Security Act to require notification to agencies with cooperative arrangements if an individual is incorrectly identified as deceased. The amendments made by this section will take effect on December 27, 2026.
