Veterans educational assistance includes programs under Chapters 30, 32, 33, 34, and 35 of Title 38, United States Code, as well as other provisions providing educational assistance to veterans. The maximum amount of veterans educational assistance that can be used for a covered examination or assessment is capped at $500 or the actual cost, whichever is lower. The number of months of entitlement charged for using educational assistance for these examinations is calculated based on the cost of the exam and the individual's monthly assistance rate. Charges for these examinations under this section do not affect entitlement to educational assistance administered by the Secretary of Defense. Approved programs of education are those approved for veterans educational assistance under chapter 35 or 36 of Title 38, or another applicable provision of law. Covered examinations and assessments include DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (DSST), College Level Examination Program (CLEP) exams, the National Career Readiness Certificate examination, and similar exams specified by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. It also includes assessments of portfolios or narratives demonstrating prior military training. The term 'institution of higher learning' is defined as in section 3452(f) of Title 38, United States Code.
