What does LOAN FORGIVENESS AND CANCELLATION FOR EDUCATORS. of Loan Forgiveness for Educators Act of 2026 do?

This section amends Section 428J of the Higher Education Act of 1965 to establish a program for loan forgiveness for educators. The program aims to enhance access to a well-prepared, diverse, and stable educator workforce by eliminating debt burdens. Not later than 270 days after enactment of the Loan Forgiveness for Educators Act of 2026, the Secretary shall carry out a program to assume covered loan obligations for qualifying educators. Qualifying educators may receive forgiveness of up to 100 percent of their outstanding loan obligations after completing five years of qualifying service. The Secretary may also enter into agreements with qualifying educators to assume monthly loan obligations during periods of qualifying service. The Secretary is authorized to issue regulations to carry out the provisions of this section. The programs established under this section will be known as Educator Loan Forgiveness Programs. Section 455(m)(4) of the Higher Education Act of 1965 is amended to reflect the changes made by this section.
