This section establishes the Historic Naval Ship Preservation Grant Program within the Department of the Interior. The program aims to support the physical preservation of historic military vessels and provide educational opportunities related to military maritime careers. Grants will be awarded on a competitive basis to eligible entities for activities such as vessel upkeep, repair, and mitigating environmental hazards. Eligible entities include units of state or local government and private nonprofit organizations that administer covered sites. A 'covered site' is defined as a venue providing public access to or displaying a historic military vessel. A 'historic military vessel' is defined as a decommissioned vessel owned and operated by the Department of Defense, Coast Guard, or Department of Transportation, or built for the United States Maritime Commission and equipped with armaments. The Secretary of the Interior, acting through the Director of the National Park Service, will administer the program in consultation with the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Defense. The Act authorizes $5,000,000 to be appropriated for the program in fiscal year 2026 and subsequent years.
