What does PREPARING K-12 EDUCATORS AND STUDENTS FOR AN AI LITERATE of LIFT AI Act do?

This section expresses a sense of Congress that the United States should provide opportunities for youth to cultivate skills and understanding necessary to use and create AI technology. The section aims to promote AI literacy and proficiency among Americans through integrating AI into education and providing training for educators. It recognizes the importance of maintaining U.S. leadership in AI technology, particularly in light of strategic adversaries' pursuit of AI for surveillance, weaponization, and economic competition. The Director of the National Science Foundation may make awards to institutions of higher education or nonprofit organizations to support research activities focused on developing AI literacy curricula, instructional materials, and teacher professional development for K-12 education. Award funds may be used for curriculum development, professional learning opportunities for educators, evaluation tools, professional development courses, hands-on learning tools, and augmenting existing curricula. AI literacy is defined as having the age-appropriate knowledge and ability to use AI effectively, critically interpret outputs, solve problems, and mitigate potential risks.
